EDUCATION AND COMMUNITY PROGRAMS COORDINATOR

POSITION DETAILS: FULL-TIME, NON-EXEMPT

San Diego Automotive Museum (SDAM) seeks a self-motivated full-time Education and Community Programs Coordinator to assist in the development and implementation of educational programs and activities for our innovative automotive museum located in historic Balboa Park. Reporting to the Chief Operating Officer the ideal candidate will possess a passion for learning and be knowledgeable about informal learning environments and best practices. A teaching certificate is a plus. 

PRIMARY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Programming

· Provide leadership in fulfilling the SDAM’s educational vision.

· Oversee the SDAM’s educational initiatives as they relate to exhibits, program planning, outreach efforts, camps, and other educational activities.

· Implement programs that are consistent with SDAM’s mission and content while aligning with curriculum standards.

· Personally lead all new and pilot programs.

· Further the success of our camp programs by developing and leading new sessions.

· Develop activities for exhibit areas and website and provide age-appropriate content.

· Participate in ongoing planning and programming.

· Maintain working knowledge of current theory and best practices in museum education and childhood and family learning.

· Maintain involvement with professional associations and activities to stay current with best practices and developments in the field.

· Works with the Director to propose new program offerings that reflect current priorities within schools, libraries, and community centers.

Partnership Development

· Establish educational partnerships with community groups and organizations.

· Represent the organization to partner agencies, organizations, and the general public.

· Engage partners and the community in participating in planning and/or sharing input on educational aspects of the museum.

· Work with local organizations to develop and implement community programs.

· Attend events and programs as a representative of SDAM.

General Duties

· Supports project administration for the Education Director, School and Education Community Programs, including completing work orders, ordering supplies, processing, tracking payments, and conducting other administrative duties.

· Consistently work in a positive and cooperative manner with all SDAM staff.

· Respond promptly to guest needs.

· Participate in continuing educational opportunities for professional growth and development.

· Complete assignments in a timely manner meeting SDAM standards.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Skills and Experience:

· A Bachelor’s degree in either education, child development, or a related field or equivalent experience

· Familiarity with K12 curriculum and common core standards

· Experience in developing programs, working with schools, and their communities

· Experience developing, organizing, and working with student camps

· Ability to transfer child development theory into practice

· Ability and desire to work with diverse populations in the communities SDAM serves

· Experience with research, development, implementation, and oversight of programs for young audiences in a children’s museum or other learning setting

· Ability to work independently with minimal direction

· Proven record of leading in a collaborative work structure

· Ability to participate effectively in teams

· Effective leadership skills that can energize work teams to respond to the Museum’s business needs

· Good verbal and written communication skills and presentation skills

· Familiarity with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook

· Ability to prioritize and work in a timely and efficient manner

· Ability to adapt to changes in the work environment, manage multiple priorities, and adjust to delays and unexpected events

Typical Physical Demands:

Sitting at desk/workstation for extended periods of time. Frequent walking, standing, stooping, bending, climbing stairs, and lifting/carrying/pushing up to 40lbs.

Typical Equipment Used:

Regular use of computer, printer, telephone, and other standard office equipment.

Position Details:

This is a full time 35-40 hours per week, nonexempt position, Monday-Friday. Weekends and some nights are to be expected. Pay range is $19.75 – $22.75 per hour, commensurate with skills and experience.
